Clark Testing’s Industrial Hygiene Laboratory supports Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) programs for varying industries. Accredited by the AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Programs (AIHA-LAP, LLC), we assist customers in selecting the proper NIOSH or OSHA method(s) necessary to carry out the appropriate sampling.

Clark provides Crystalline Silica analysis to advise companies if workers are within the permissible exposure limit (PEL) set forth by OSHA.
Samples are prepared and analyzed by X-ray Diffraction according to NIOSH 7500 to quantitatively determine the presence of Crystalline Silica. Analysis is reported as α-Quartz, Cristobalite, and Tridymite; also taking note of any interference in the analysis.
Clark provides sampling and analysis on both air samples and bulk materials.

What is Silica and Silicosis?
Metal Fume and Metal Dust are commonly sampled during personal exposure assessments. Exposure may lead to irritation and in some cases disease; ultimately harming your nervous system and organs. All samples are prepared by OSHA and NIOSH approved methods that include hot plate or microwave digestion. The samples are then analyzed to determine the airborne concentration of various metals by means of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy (ICP) or Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (GFAA).
Routine testing include, but is not limited to:
- Arsenic, Beryllium, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Nickel, etc.
- Welding Fume Metals (13 metals) profile
- Elemental Scan (>20 metals)
In addition to air samples, Clark offers elemental analysis on various bulk materials.

What is Beryllium Exposure?
Air samples captured for Organic Vapors are prepared by NIOSH and OSHA methods and analyzed by Gas Chromatography (GC) or Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC).
We routinely provide analysis of the following Organic Vapors:
- Various solvents - Benzene, Ethyl benzene, Toluene, Xylene, etc.
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons/Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons
- Paraffin Wax Fume
- Total Hydrocarbons
Most Organic vapor sampling requires special handling; notably refrigerator/freezer storage.
The Organics Lab also offers special project analysis tailored to meet clients' specific needs.

What is Organic Vapor Exposure?
Using various NIOSH and OSHA approved methods, our laboratory performs routine analysis of anions by Ion Chromatography to determine airborne concentrations.
The most common test requests for anions include:
- Acid Fumes – Hydrochloric Acid, Nitric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, etc.
- Sulfur Dioxide
- Fluorides – Particulate Fluoride and Gaseous Fluoride
- Nitric Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide
In addition, Clark provides the analysis of Hexavalent Chromium. Accredited to AIHA-LAP, LLC, we follow OSHA ID-215 v2. According to this method, samples are prepared based on the operation being sampled: Painting Operations, Plating Operations, or Welding/Other Operations. Samples are unstable therefore requirement special handling.

We routinely perform Gravimetric analysis on filter cassettes. Doing so provides an air concentration of the particulate matter, by its overall mass captured on the filter with regard to the air volume sampled. Since gravimetric determinations are non-destructive, additional testing may be performed. Such add-on testing may include Silica, Metals, Hexavalent Chromium, or CTPV to mention a few.
- Gravimetric – Total/Respirable Dust, Welding Fume Particulate
Another common test parameter includes Extractions. We routinely perform extractions on filter cassettes. The methods utilize such chemical solvents as benzene, cyclohexane, acetone, etc.
Common determinations include:
- Extractions – Oil Mist, Benzene Soluble Fraction/Coal Tar Pitch Volatiles, Coke Oven Emissions
Methods NIOSH 0500, NIOSH 0600, and NIOSH 5042 are included in our AIHA-LAP, LLC accreditation.
Clark offers support to ensure Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) personnel are OSHA compliant. In doing so, we will:
- review your sampling campaign to identify the proper NIOSH or OSHA method necessary to carry out your sampling.
- determine samples that can be collected on the same media.
- identify all special sampling handling requirements.
- provide all necessary sampling media to carry out your testing. Sampling media includes Passive Monitors, Filter Cassettes, and Sorbent Tubes.
We also have skilled staff trained to provide on-site Qualitative and Quantitative Site Assessments. Our staff travel throughout the Unites States, regions of Canada, and also regions of Mexico.
The services include:
- an assessment of the tasks associated to potential exposure(s).
- a review of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s) associated to the materials being used in the various Departments/Tasks.
- on-site sampling for Chemical Exposures, Noise, and Heat Stress.
